Department of Zoology

The Department of Zoology was established in 1958 with the introduction of BSc Zoology. In 1998 a Vocational Degree Course in Zoology (Semester System) with Vocational subject Food Microbiology and Complementary subject Biochemistry was introduced. The Department has conducted a UGC sponsored Add-on course in Health Management, Yoga and Beauty Care. We also offer two short term modules - Human Genetics and Reproductive Endocrynology, Human Welfare and Public Health.

• The formal Inauguration of Zoology Association "OIKOS 2009 " was conducted on 4^th August 2009 by Dr. Elizabeth M J, Prof. and HOD of Zoology, Catholicate College, Pathanamthitta. In this occasion, release the Manuscript Magazine OIKOS 2008 by Our Principal Rev. Dr. Sr. Suma Rose CMC.




• Zoological Society of Kerala conducted the Zoofest-09 for the Colleges in the South Zone at Deva Matha College, Kuravilangadu on 14^th February 2009. The following students won prizes in the event.

• The Dept. of Zoology instituted the Golden Jubilee Memorial Scholarships awarded to the best outgoing student in BSc Zoology ML I & ML II from this year onwards and enhanced the amount of Prof. Annammma George Memorial Scholarships awarded to the best out going student in BSc Zoology final Year.
  
  

• Ms. Rincymol Varghese, Ms. Ushus P Hariharan, Dr. Reethama O V and 31 students of II DC Zoology went to see the exhibition MEDEX 2009 conducted by the Medical College kottayam on 19^th January 2009.
  
  

• The Golden Jubilee Memorial All Kerala Intercollegiate Paper Presentation Competition Voyage-2009 "The Impact of sand mining on the Ecosystem" was conducted on 15^th January 2009. It was inaugurated by Rev. Dr. Sr. Suma Rose, Principal. Students from 13 different colleges were participated in the event. The winners are :
        I Prize  - Elizabeth Mary John    : SB College, Changanacherry
        II Prize  - Elizabeth V Mathew    : SH College, Thevara
  
  

• On 5^th January 2009 Students of I^st DC Zoology & I^st sem FMB along with Smt. Anitha Jose and Ms. Ushus P Hariharan, conducted a visit to St. Xavier’s College Vaikam to see the Exhibition on Ornamental Fishes.
  
  

• The Dept. of Zoology in association with the Dept. of English observe “Respect our elders” as the value. Both of the departments collected an amount of Rs.6500/- from the students and conducted a charity visit to the nearby old age home-” St. Vincent Poor Home, Changanacherry on I^st January 2009.
  
  

• Smt Thresiakutty Antony, Smt Anitha Jose, Smt Valsala Joseph, Smt Powai Vargese, Ms Ushus P Hariharan and Smt Rincymol Varghese participated in the National Seminar on "Media & Culture" organized jointly by Assumption College Changanassery & SJCC,Kurisummod on 3^rd December 2008.
  

• A lecture on Disaster Management was conducted for II^nd DC & III^rdDC Zoology students on 1^st & 2^nd December 2008 in the Kurialassery Hall. Ms Santhi Prabha V , School of Environmental Studies, MG University was the resource person.
  

• Juby Jacob V^th Sem FMB , Salini Sreekumar & Vidya P Nair II^nd DC Zoology won II^nd Prize in the Intercollegiate Quiz Competition on ‘ Nano bio technology’ organized by the Dept of BioSciences, Mar Thoma Copllege, Thiruvalla on 27^th November 2008.
  

• Miss Ushus P Hariharan and three of our students participated in the National Seminar on “ Advances in Nanobiotechnology” held during 27^th & 28^th November organized by the Dept of Biosciences , Mar Thoma College Thiruvalla.
  

• Swetha Susan Chacko, III^rd DC Zoology participated in the Elocution Competition conducted by the Dept. of Chemistry on 14^th November 2008 and won I^st Prize
  

• Prof K A Thomas Memorial Inter collegiate Quiz Competition on ‘Life Science’ conducted by the Dept of Zoology, S B College Changanassery on 12^th November. Two teams of two students each were participated. The team – Juby Jacob V^th Sem FMB & Vidya P Nair II^nd DC Zoology won II Prize and Geethu A ,V^th Sem FMB & Saliny Sreekumar II^nd DC Zoology won IV^th Prize in the event.
  

• Students of the III^rd Sem Food Microbiology students were undergoing On the Job Training Programme at Dairy Training Centre, Kottayam from 10^th to 20^th November 2008.
  

• Fasting Day - was observed on 7^th November 2008 and sum of Rs 1280/- was collected by the students.
  

• Smt. Thresiakutty Antony and Smt. Valsala Joseph attended the National Seminar on “ The Relevance of Community Colleges in the Kerala Scenario “ organized by the ICRDCE , Chennai and APACC, Changanassery on 1^st November 2008 at Assumption College, Changanassery.
  

• Mission Day Celebration on 21^st October 2008. Through the various food stalls and other entertainment programme conducted ,our students contributed an amount of Rs. 1315/ towards the Mission.
  

• Study Tour Programme – 2008. - Our Final Year Students including both BSc ML I & BSc ML II , conducted a Five Day Study Tour Programme. They visited different habitats and Three Research Institutions on the way.
  

• Miss Ushus P Hariharan, Miss Rincymol Varghese and all of the Final year students of the ML II FMB Class, attended the National Seminar conducted at St Aloysious College, Edathua on 10^th October, 2008.
  

• 'Wild Life Week Celebration – 2008’ - Various competitions like Essay Writing on ‘Wild Life Coservation & Deforestation’, Pencil Drawing on ‘Deforestation’ and Painting on ‘Wilderness’ was conducted on 3^rd , 6^th & 7^th October ,2008 respectively. A number of students of various classes other than Zoology were participated.
  

• Juby Jacob (V^th Sem FMB) won I^st Prize in Essay Writing Competition & Swetha Susan Chacko ( III^rd DC Zoology) won III^rd Prize in Elocution Competition conducted by the Dept. of Forest and Wild Life Conservation Govt of Kerala, in connection with the Wild Life Week Celebration , for School & College Students on 2^nd & 3^rd October, 2008 at M D Seminary Higher Secondary School, Kottayam.
  

• World Elder’s Day Celebration conducted by the Dept of English on 29^th September 2008. Our students prepared posters and displayed in the campus.
  

• Elocution Competition Conducted by the Dept of Malayalam in connection with the Gandhian Day Celebration on 29^th September,2008 – Swetha Susan Chacko (III^rd DC Zoology) won I^st Prize.
  

• An Interactive Discussion Session on ‘Research Methodology ‘ was conducted for Zoology Students on 29^th September,2008 by the participants – Miss Juby Jacob & Miss Ann Mary John ( Final Year Students ) – of the one day workshop conducted at CMS College, Kottayam on 27^th September,2008.
  

• Miss Ushus P Hariharan & Miss Rincymol Varghese attended a one day Workshop on ‘ How to do a Project ? & Research Methodology ‘ organized by TIES, Vadavathur held at CMS College, Kottaym on 27^th September, 2008.
  

• Our students participated in the Workshop on ‘Research Methodology’ conducted by TIES , Vadavathur at CMS College Kottayam ,on 27^th September,2008.
  

• Intercollegiate Quiz Competition on ‘Heart and Heart Diseases’ conducted by Puspagiri Heart Institute, Tiruvalla on 24^th September. Miss. Juby Jacob (V^th Sem FMB & Miss Vidya P Nair (II^nd DC Zoology) participated and they reached the 6^th position.
  

• Smt Anitha Jose attended a two day National Seminar on ‘ Science and Religion Dialogue : New Perspectives ‘ conducted jointly by the Indian Institute of Science and Religion, Pune, Institute of Science and Religion ,Aluva and Manavikom Social and Eco Circle, Kottayam held at CSI Retreat Centre, Kottayam on 19^th & 20^th September, 2008.
  

• ‘Athapookalam Competition ‘conducted by the ‘Nature Club’ of the College, Sponsored by ‘Kannan Devan Group on 3^rd September,2008. The team pioneered by our III^rd DC students won II^nd Prize.
  

• ‘Thiruvathirakali Competition’ conducted by the Dept of Malayalam on 2^nd September,2008. Our Students won I^st Prize. The team includes 10 students.
  

• College Union Executive Election – 2008-09, managed and conducted by the Dept of Zoology. Smt Thresiakutty Antony, HOD was the Returning Officer.
  

• A one day ‘ Workshop on Zoology Practicals as per the Revised Syllabii’ organized under the auspices of the ZSK at Alphonsa College, Pala on 27^th August , 2008. Smt Tessy Jose, Smt Valsala Joseph, Smt Anitha Jose and Dr Reethamma O V participated in the Workshop.
  

• We offer Human Genetics and Reproductive Endocrinology.
