Dept of Social Work conducted a two day National Seminar on “Re-accentuating Mental Health Perspectives in Social Work Practice” on 29th and 30th of August 2008. Dr. Roy Abraham Kallivayalil, President Indian Association of Social Psychiatry inaugurated the Programme.The other dignitories of the inaugural function were Dr. R. Parthasarathy, Professor Department of Psychiatry NIMHANS,Rev. Dr. Fr. Joseph Naduvilezham Manager of Assumption College, Principal Rev. Dr. Sr. Suma Rose CMC., and Sr. Shalini CMC Head of the Dept. of Social work Assumption College. The two days National Seminar aimed at the reaccentuation of mental health perspectives in various fields like family, School, Community and industry. Eminent Personalities who proved their excellence in the respective fields handled the sessions.
Redefining Mental Health in schools was the first session and it was dealt by Dr. SitaLekshmi George, Associate Professor Department of Psychiatry Mosc Medical College Kolenchery. The areas discussed were the qualities of a counselor, mental health problems in scholl going children and setting up a child mental health unit in thr school. The paper presentation under this session was done by Mrs. Susha Janardhanan, Research Scholar Loyola College Trivandrum on student Counselling Centre and its activities, a case study and Mr. Bino Thomas Ph D Scholor, NIMHANS, Banglore on Psychiatric Social work Intervention for Promotion of Life Skills in Adolescents: some observations.
Followed by was the session on Expanding horizons of Community Mental health in India: Implications for Psychiatric Social Workers dealt by Dr. R. Parthasarathy, Professor, Department of Psychiatric Social Work, NIMHANS.
The session on Family Life Cycle Approach And Social work Intervention was done by Dr. Sobhana H, Academician St. George College of Management and Sciences and Family Therapist, Bangalore and Presenters under the session were Ms. Anitas Punnose , student , MCC Chennai on the topic generalist Intervention Model- A practice Model For Social Workers and Ms. Reem Susan Varghese, Faculty Department of Social Work, Assumption College on the “Role of Attachment styles in Moulding Human Relations Implications for Social work.
The main attraction of the seminar was the workshop on Social Analytical Skills in social work Practice by Dr. Rajaram Subbain , International Psychosocial Consultant,Banglore.
The session on “Wellness in the Industrial Field” was handler by Mr. Babu Thomas, Managing Director, The Plantation Co-orporation of Kerala Ltd. Ms. Feba Elizebeth Jacob, former student of Assumption College was the Presenter under this session on the topic Study open the Stress and coping strategies adopted by IT professionals.
The valedictory function of the National Seminar was presided over by Sr.Mercy Nedumpuram, Vice Principal of Assumption College. The chief guest of the ceremony was Dr.G.C Gopalapillai, Managing Director of Infrastructure Kerala Ltd.The other dignitaries were Dr.Mariamma Joseph, former Course coordinator of Department of Social Work, Assumption College and Dr.Sr.SumaRose, Principal of Assumption College.
The two days National Seminar proved to be enriching for social workers at the academic and intervention level.
The MSW students attended the National Seminar on "Social Work in Educational Institutions". Conducted by Santhigiri College, Vazhithala, Thodupuzha on 6th March 2008 . The Key Note Address was given by Prof. Allan John, Head, Dept of Social Work, Sacred heart College, Thiruppathoor, Tamil Nadu which was followed by Interactive sessions and discussions.The IVth SEM MSW student Ms Lakshmi.J & Ms.Vidya Vijayan bagged the first prize for Project Writing conducted by the college on that day.
The Department of Social work organised a three-day theatre workshop for the MSW Students from 1st to 3rd March 2008 .The street theatre workshop was lead by Mr Mangaldas, a theatre artist. The workshop helped the students to polish their inborn talents & to develop their communication skills. The programme was arranged on the part of their paper in IVth semester, Development Communication.
A study tour to Mumbai was organised by the Department of Social work for the IVth SEM MSW students on 9th–16th February 2008. The programme included visits to prestigious institutions in the field of Social Work like Tata Institute of Soicial Sciences (TISS), Creative Handicraft, Nirmala Nikethan, J.J.hospital, Valsalya and Navajeevan.
The MSW Students of Assumption College, Changanacherry participated in the "Spectra 08"( National level seminar and students meet of Social Work students) on 7th-8th February 2008 at Marian College Kuttikkanam, Kerala. Ms.Soumya Suresh (IVth SEM MSW) became the first runner up of "Promising Social Worker" and Ms Lekshmi.J & Ms Vidya Vijayan bagged the first prize for Project Writing.
The Department of Social Work in Collaboration with SEWA (Self Employed Women’s Association) organised a One day workshop on the Development of State Policy for Street Vendors on 31st January 2008.The conceptual understanding of the issue, public opinion mobilization, interaction with the authorities and advocacy were the topic held at the workshop. The Local level methodology training was also given to the student which includes data collection, mapping and local follow up.
The Department of Social Work had an interface with Ashok Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment (ATREE) on 10th January 2008. An orientation about ATREE was given by Mr. Deepak. The Department of Social Work got an opportunity Collaborate with the activities of ATREE
The Department of Social Work in Association with Eramathoor Youth Movement an NGO did Collaborative work in the field of School Social Work on 9th January 2008 .The Department acted as a Research Consultant and prepared a Questionnaire for the Adult Education Programme to understand the Quality of Sex Education given at School.
