DEPARTMENT PROFILE
The Faculty of Home Science, now re-named Family and Community Science, was started in 1960 with a three-year Degree course in Home Science. At present the Department also offers self-financing postgraduate programme in Food Service Management & Dietetics (started in 2002), a career oriented Add-on Diploma Course in Housing & Interior Designing, a Certificate Course in Fruit Processing under the Incubator Programme and a one month module in Basic Tailoring Techniques and another in Gift wrapping & napkin folding.

Issue of Certificates of Add on Course- Housing and Interior decoration & the Enrichment Progarmme- Simple Snack preparation on 12th February 2009. Certificates were issued by Rev. Dr. Sr. Suma Rose, Principal in the presence of the Faculty of the department of Home Science.
The Community Nutrition Camp by M. Sc Ist year Food Service Management and Dietetics Students was carried out from 3rd to 6th December 2008 in Parekkadavu of Vazhappallay Panchayath. Nutrition Education to the locals of Vazhappally Panchayath was given by Sr. Philomenamma John, Ms. Merin Mannuel and students of I M. Sc FSMD.
The Annual Intercollegiate Quiz Competition and Seminar was conducted on 26th November 2008. Ms. Gayathry C P , Chief Dietitian, ESI hospital Peroorkada, TVM was the Quiz Master.
Annual Nutritia Seminar on Diabetes was conducted by Dr. Sebastian Abraham, (MD, DM), Asst. Professor Nephrology, Medical College Kottayam.
Second General Body meeting of Home Science Alumni Association of Assumption College (HSAAAC) was conducted on 11th October 2008. The meeting was inaugurated by Principal, Rev. Dr. Sr. Suma Rose. Mrs. Aleswa Antony (Rtd. Lect. and Alumnae, Dept. of Home Science), President HSAAAC , presided over the meeting.
An Alumnae Lecture by Ms. Anju M Neeliyara Lecturer, Dept. of Home Science, St. Joseph’s College , Alapuzha, was also conducted.
The students of the Dept. participated in the Athapookalam Competition, conducted by Kannan Devan Nature Club(KDNC) on 3rd September 2008 and won First Prize .
The freshers Day Celebration and Welcome Party for I DC and I PG FSMD students were conducted on 2nd September 2008. An Introductory talk was given by Sr. Philominamma John. I DC ands I PG FSMD students exhibited their talents. Refreshments were provided..
The Association of the Department of Home Science, in collaboration with the ‘Red Ribbon Club’ conducted a blood group detection camp on 9th September 2008.
Rev. Dr. Sr. Suma Rose, Principal, Assumption College, inaugurated the camp. Around 177 students of this college utilized the facility to detect their blood groups. The Royal Laboratories , Changanacherry, helped the department to conduct the Camp.
Sr. Philomenamma John attended a National Seminar on Leadership Techniques in Christ College Bangloore from 27th-30th May 2008.
Home Science Association was formally inaugurated by Dr.Usha Chandrashekar,Former Deen,Avinashalingam University for women,Coimbatore on 28th August 2008.During the inaugural address, she explained the origin of home science and scope of home science in today’s world.
Dr.Shirly Rachael John,Head of the Department of Home Science,St.Teresas College,Ernakulam,Special Invitee for the function,felicitated the gahering.
Our vice-principal Rev.Dr.Mercy Nedumpuram and Head of the Department of Home Science,Rev.Sr.Philomenamma John were also present for the function.
The gathering was coloured with the variety entertainments by the students.

Sr. Philomenamma John , H.O.D, Dept. of Home Science rejoined the Department on 15th March 2008 after the FIP Deputation.
Ms. Anne Mary Joseph, Ms. Merin Manuel and Ms. Minitha Susan Joseph, staff members of the Dept. of Home Science participated in the flower arrangement competition conducted by CHASS ' The FARM Fest 2008' and secured IIIrd prize.
Ms. Minitha Susan Joseph took a class on "Scope of Food and Fruit Processing" for the directorate of Industries and Commerce, Changanasserry Taluk.
Our Ist M. Sc. Students as part of their curriculum participated in the Community Nutrition Camp at Vadakkekara Panchatyath.
Anu T. Daniel, Archana S. Nair and Princy Cherian from the Dept. of Home Science has secured the Ist, IInd and IIIrd ranks in the M. G. University, M.Sc. Food Science Management and Dietetics Examinations for the Acadamic Year 2005-2007.
Ms. Manjulin Jacob inaugurated the Kids Fest 2008 as a part of the Annual Day Celebrations of Kristhu Jyothi group of schools, Chethipuzha on 18 th January 2008.She also demonstrated some craft works for the students.
Our IInd PG FSMD students as a part of their curriculum conducted a Food Festival La Delicia -2008 on 9th, 10th and 11th January 2008.
