DEPARTMENT PROFILE
The Department of History was started in the College in 1990, with the starting of a UG course in History. Masters programme in History was started in 2001 on a self-funded basis. BA degree in Museology and Archaeology was initiated in 2005 with financial support from UGC.

NEWS & ACHIEVEMENTS

Under the auspices of the Research & P G Department of History, an International Coins& Currency Exhibition “Numisma” was conducted on 14th-15th July 2009. The leading Numismatist and Philatelist of Kerala, Sri Sebastian Mathew displayed the exhibits. The Coins and stamps preserve old forms of writing, portraits of eminent persons and reproduction of lost works of art. They also assist in the study of early customs, in ascertaining date, in clarifying economic status and trade relations and in tracing changes in political attitudes.
It provided an excellent opportunity for the staff and students of the College to get a first hand knowledge about international numismatics.
On 2nd February 2009, tourists from Sweden visited the Assumption Heritage Museum.
Ms. Zainab Salim of II P G History won the IInd Rank in the university examinations held in May 2008.
The Dept. of History organized a National Seminar on “Role of women in the Emerging Indian Society” from 12th- 14th Jan 2009.A great achievement in the record of the Dept, the National seminar was a successful endeavor which provided an opportunity for a comprehensive study of the topic. The seminar was presided by Rev. Dr. Joseph Naduvilezham, Manager Assumption College. It was inaugurated by Smt. Padma Ramachandran IAS, Former Chief Secretary to the Govt. of Kerala and former Vice Chancellor, M. S University, Baroda, Gujarat. The Keynote address was delivered by Dr. Manimekhalai, Director, Centre for Womens studies, Bharathidasan University Trichinappally. Felicitation were gives by Rev. Sr. Roselin SABS, founder head of the Dept and former Principal, Dr. Sreelekha S HOD, Dept. of History St. Theresas College Ernakulam and Smt. Marina Tharakan, President of AASA.
The seminar was an occassion with a number of scholarly presentations on various aspects of the theme and a variety of opportunities for discussion and exchange of ideas. Dr. Molly Kuruvilla, Director, Centre for Women’s studies, University of Calicut, Dr. Elsy Jose MRCOG, DGO, Medical Centre, Kottayam, Dr. Yasoda Sanmughasundaram, Former V.C, Mother Theresa University, Kodaikanal, Prof. L.K Lenus, St. Joseph’s College for Communications, Changanacherry were the important resource persons who participated in the seminar. The Panel Discussion on “Dimensions of Womanhood” was the most striking sessions in the seminar. The participation of Dr. M.M Mathew (HOD, Political Science, Marthoma College, Tiruvalla), Rev. Dr. Sr. Joan Chunkapura, Director, TRADA, Kottayam, Dr. J.G. Ray, Reader, Dept. of Botany S.B. College, Smt. Lathika Subhash, Secretary, KPCC and Smt. K.R Meera Freelance Writer and Journalist made the session interesting enriching and inspiring. A Poster Exhibition on “Participation of Women in the Progressive Movements in Kerala was arranged by Ms. Geeta from school of Medical Sciences, M.G University, Kottayam.
Dr. Sheela Irin Jayanthi attended the National Seminar on “Muzeris Heritage Project :Archaeological Research at Pattanam organized by the Dept of Archaeology, Govt. of Kerala at Thiruvananthapuram on 18th Nov. 2008.
The History Association was inaugurated by Prof. George Kurien, HOD of the Dept. of History and Vice-principal of C.M.S College Kottayam. Cultural activities were performed by the students of the Dept. Various competitions were conducted by the Association. The winners are as follows:-

Dr. Sheela Irin Jayanthi J, Ms. Raji Sebastian and Ms. Malini accompanied the students of III DC Museology and II PG History for the study tour to Thiruvananthapuram from 6th to 8th November 2008.
Ms. Rehna George and Ms. Jeena Thomas attended the 3 day National Seminar on “Environmental History: Issues in Prudence and Profligacy” at U.C College, Aluva from 30th Oct. to 1st Nov.2008.
The Students of IInd B A Museology and Archaeology conducted an excavation at Prasanth Nagar, Kaviyoor on 3rd & 4th October 2008. They excavated an Urn burial, a form of burial belonging to the Megalithu period. It is estimated to the period 3500-2500 B C.
The III DC students went for their 3 days study tour with Ms. Sheela and Ms. Whyni to Mysore, Ootty and Coimbatore from 25th to 29th Sept. 2008.
Ms. Rosamma, Ms. Malini and Ms. Jipsy with the students of II DC and III DC Museology visited the Synagogue at Mattancherry on 10th Sept. 2008.
Ms. Rosamma, Ms. Mariamma and a group of students from the Dept. visited a Mentally Challenged Institution run by Adoration Sisters on 5th Sept. 2008.
The students of I DC, II DC and III DC Museology and Archeology accompanied by the faculty members Ms. Jeena , Ms. Joby and Ms. Rehana visited the Trippunithara Hill Palace on 26th August 2008.
Assumption Day and Independence Day Celebration was conducted by History and Commerce Departments on 19th August 2008.
Ms. Whyni Gopi participated in the 10 days Orientation Camp for N.S.S Programme Officers at Rajagiri College, Kalamassery from 5th to 14th August 2008.
An Inter Department Quiz Competition “From Mutiny to Millennium” was conducted by the Dept. of History. Ms. Kiran Maria Jose of English Dept. was the Quiz master.
An Induction Programme was conducted by the Dept. for the first year History and Museology students on 31st July 2008.
Ms. Rosamma Jacob, Ms. Rehana George, Ms. Jipsy George, Ms. Jeena Thomas and Ms. Joby Jose attended a Seminar on Mentoring at S.B College, Changanacherry on 11th and 12th July 2008.
The Manuscript Magazine of Dept of History- "Historia 2009" will be released in the month of May.
A Guest Lecture was conducted by the Dept.of History for Museology Students about Museum Designing on 1st August 2007.
