Department of Botany

The Department of Botany started functioning in the year 1957 with the introduction of BSc Botany with Zoology and Chemistry as subsidiary subjects. To meet the growing demand for job-oriented courses the Department introduced the UGC sponsored Add-on course in Horticulture and Mushroom Cultivation in 2004 and two short- term modules in 2006.

• Inauguration of the Botany Association on 6^th August 2009 by Dr. Anu G Krishnan Asst. Prof. Horticulture KVK Kumarakum.She conducted a Seminar on “Horticultural Practices”.
  

• A talk by Prof. A V Thomas (Retd) S.B. College, Chanaganacherry was arranged on 4^th Feb. 2009 for the Botany students to motivate and inspire their for the Examination.
  
  

• "Expo Botanica " an exhibition of Medicinal Plants was organized by the Botany Association on 23^rd January 2009 in the Botany block. It was inaugurated by Prof. Mary Jayamol Antony(HOD, Botany) . Keynote address was delivered by Prof. Rose Mary Thomas (HOD, Chemistry).
  
  

• Dr. Sr. Mercy Nedupuram and Sr. Amala, attended and presented papers in a National Seminar on Molecules to Drugs organized by Mar Athanasius College, Kothamangalam from 22^nd to 23^rd January 2009.
  
  

• Phyto Edufest – 2008, Golden Jubilee Memorial educational programme on Plant Science was inaugurated by Vice Principal Dr.Sr.Mercy Nedupuram on 26^th Nov. 2008. An Intercollegiate Paper Presentation competition on "Global Food Security through Sustainable Agriculture" & A seminar on "Biodiversity of Underutilized Ornamental plants of Kerala" was conducted by Dr.V.T Antony Dept. of Botany, S.B College, Changanacherry were held in connection with Phyto Edufest .

• Sr.Marykutty Joseph (Sr. Amala) was awarded Ph.D on 22^nd November 2008.
  




• Open Defence of the Ph.D. Thesis entitled, “Studies on the antimicrobial properties of selected wild mushrooms from Kerala” by Sr.Marykutty Joseph (Sr. Amala) was conducted on 12^th November 2008 at the Dept. of Botany University of Kerala, Kariavattom under the Chairmanship of Dr. Kalyan Kumar Mukherjee, Dept.of Botany, Bose Institute, Kolkata. All the faculty members of the department participated.
  




• Freshers day was celebrated on 7^th August 2008.
  




• Rev. Sr. Milani Mary CMC, former faculty member of Dept .of Botany who served the institution from 1963-90 expired on 17^th July 2008.
  




• The activities of the Botany Association for the year 2008-09 was inaugurated on 21^st August 2008 by Ms.Nimmy Jose, Associate professor, Agricultural University. She presented a paper on Biocontrol of Pests. A manuscript ,Magazine "Haritha 2008"was released on the occasion
